"Music is your own experience, your own thoughts, your wisdom. If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn. They teach you there's a boundary line to music. But, man, there's no boundary line to art."

- Charlie "YardBird" Parker

Dave Matthews Band’s Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King, an album recorded in response to the tragic death of longtime saxophonist LeRoi Moore, was one of the big surprises at tonight’s announcement of the nominations for the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards. Big Whiskey is in the running for Album of the Year, the first time the band have been honored with a nomination in that category. The platinum-selling album is also up for Best Rock Album.

In the three major Grammy categories — Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year — rock music had a very meager showing. Big Whiskey is the sole rock offering for Album of the Year, while Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody” is the only rock nominee in the Song and Record categories. Earlier today, I had correctly predicted the nods for Kings of Leon, but my prognosticating powers were less reliable when it came to U2 and Green Day. While both bands are up for Best Rock Album — for No Line on the Horizon and 21st Century Breakdown, respectively — they failed to make a dent in the three major categories. Overall, U2 snagged three nominations, Green Day came away with three, and Kings of Leon grabbed four.

Here are some of the notable Grammy nominations in the rock category. The winners will be announced in Los Angeles on January 31, 2010.
