"Music is your own experience, your own thoughts, your wisdom. If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn. They teach you there's a boundary line to music. But, man, there's no boundary line to art."

OK Go’s most recent album, Of the Blue Colour of the Sky, came out back in January, but it might be forefront in people’s minds right now because of the band’s recent inventive video for the single “This Too Shall Pass.” Capitalizing on the buzz-heavy clip, the band have planned a tour that starts April 13 and ends with their appearance at Bonnaroo on June 11. The soul-rock trio Earl Greyhound will be opening for OK Go.

In related news, OK Go have split with EMI and are planning on re-releasing Of the Blue Colour of the Sky through their own label, Paracadute. The new label goes into effect starting in April, so clearly OK Go are hoping that between a headlining tour and a beloved new video, they’ll be able to boost their album sales.

Pearl Jam are heading to Saturday Night Live this weekend, but they’ll be hopping back on the road in May for a month-long tour. After their May 1 headlining gig at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, they’ll be covering the Midwest and East Coast, concluding with two dates at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Skillet will be taking to the road next month for a five-week tour that sees the band covering the South and Midwest. The hard-rock quartet will still be supporting last year’s Awake, an album that I thought was mediocre but has helped the band transition from the Christian-audience niche into the larger mainstream rock world. Joining them on this tour will be two other Christian acts: Red and the Letter Black.

Skillet Tour Dates:

  • Apr. 15 - Scranton, PA - Scranton Cultural Center
  • Apr. 18 - Charlotte, NC - Bojangles Coliseum
  • Apr. 22 - Raleigh, NC - TBA
  • Apr. 23 - Savannah, GA - TBA
  • Apr. 24 - Aiken, SC - USC Aiken Convocation Center
  • Apr. 25 - Pensacola, FL - Saenger Theater
  • Apr. 29 - Lafayette, LA - Cajundome Convention Center

  • May 2 - Jonesboro, AR - ASU Convocation Center
  • May 4 - Ft. Smith, AR - Ft. Smith Convention Center
  • May 6 - Park City, KS - Hartman Arena
  • May 7 - Dodge City, KS - Dodge City Civic Center
  • May 9 - Topeka, KS - Kansas Expocentre
  • May 11 - Bismarck, ND - Bismarck Civic Center
  • May 13 - Rapid City, SD - Rushmore Plaza Civic Center
  • May 15 - Fargo, ND - Urban Plains Center
  • May 20 - Saginaw, MI - The Theater at the Dow Event Center

Tom Morello has said that when he was a kid his favorite superhero was Iron Man, but unlike a lot of his fellow comic-book nerds he’s going to have a crucial role in the upcoming Iron Man 2 film. Over the weekend, the Rage Against the Machine guitarist revealed via Twitter that he will be scoring the sequel, which comes out May 7.

Referring to a brief cameo he had in the first film, Morello writes, “Is that really me in Iron Man? Of course. Iron Man kicks my ass. I’m working on score for Iron Man 2. Rockin. Movie is awesome.” There’s no word when the score album will be released, but Paste is reporting that composer John Debney will be assisting Morello with the instrumental music. In addition, there will be an all-AC/DC soundtrack that accompanies the film, guaranteeing that this big-budget action movie will be well-stocked when it comes to hard-rock heroics.

Since the beginning, rock music has been dominated by men. But despite resistance that, sadly, carries on to this day, female artists have managed to assert themselves in a genre that sometimes seems hostile to their inclusion.

With that in mind, I’ve put together a list of the greatest female artists in contemporary rock, saluting the most vital and exciting women songwriters and musicians out today. Rock may still be a man’s world, but these women are breaking down barriers.
