"Music is your own experience, your own thoughts, your wisdom. If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn. They teach you there's a boundary line to music. But, man, there's no boundary line to art."

- Charlie "YardBird" Parker

Tom Morello has said that when he was a kid his favorite superhero was Iron Man, but unlike a lot of his fellow comic-book nerds he’s going to have a crucial role in the upcoming Iron Man 2 film. Over the weekend, the Rage Against the Machine guitarist revealed via Twitter that he will be scoring the sequel, which comes out May 7.

Referring to a brief cameo he had in the first film, Morello writes, “Is that really me in Iron Man? Of course. Iron Man kicks my ass. I’m working on score for Iron Man 2. Rockin. Movie is awesome.” There’s no word when the score album will be released, but Paste is reporting that composer John Debney will be assisting Morello with the instrumental music. In addition, there will be an all-AC/DC soundtrack that accompanies the film, guaranteeing that this big-budget action movie will be well-stocked when it comes to hard-rock heroics.

Since the beginning, rock music has been dominated by men. But despite resistance that, sadly, carries on to this day, female artists have managed to assert themselves in a genre that sometimes seems hostile to their inclusion.

With that in mind, I’ve put together a list of the greatest female artists in contemporary rock, saluting the most vital and exciting women songwriters and musicians out today. Rock may still be a man’s world, but these women are breaking down barriers.

With Them Crooked Vultures seemingly monopolizing Dave Grohl’s time these days — they’re even planning a second album this summerFoo Fighters fans have wondered if he had cooled on his principal band. But after earlier talking about taking a hiatus from Foo Fighters, Grohl spoke to Rolling Stone on Friday night to say that the band would be recording a new album this year.

Grohl revealed that Foo Fighters would be working with producer Butch Vig, who masterminded Nirvana’s Nevermind and more recently produced Green Day’s Grammy-winning 21st Century Breakdown. “Me and [drummer] Taylor [Hawkins] have already started demoing songs,” Grohl said, later adding, “I think this could be our heaviest album yet.”

The question of a timeframe for this album is a little murkier, though. In the Rolling Stone article, writer Shirley Halperin mentions that it could come out in September, but in a separate interview with the BBC, Grohl is quoted as saying, “Foo Fighters have just started writing and we’re going to start recording in September.” Considering that the second Them Crooked Vultures album is supposedly going to be recorded this summer, it would make sense that the BBC quote is more accurate — meaning that Grohl would jump straight from the TCV sessions right into the new Foo record.
