White Stripes - ‘Under Great White Northern Lights’ Review

The White Stripes haven't put out an album since 2007's superb Icky Thump, so you can understand the anticipation surrounding the release of their new live disc, Under Great White Northern Lights. The album was recorded during the duo's 2007 tour of Canada to support Icky Thump, and it does a fantastic job of capturing them in all their large-and-loud glory.

Under Great White Northern Lights will be a must-own for White Stripes fans, as will a standalone documentary of the same name that chronicles the same tour, but if you're not that familiar with this band, I'd advise avoiding this live album until you've dug into their studio records. Frontman Jack White likes to reinvent his band's hits on stage, so the radically different live versions of some popular hits can make for disorienting listening for the White Stripes neophyte. But if you're someone who loves this band, especially if you've seen them live, then you'll want this record. Like right now.
