"Music is your own experience, your own thoughts, your wisdom. If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn. They teach you there's a boundary line to music. But, man, there's no boundary line to art."

- Charlie "YardBird" Parker

Stone Temple Pilots’ first album in nine years will be released on May 25th, the reunited rockers announced today on their official Website. The album, which debuted this week at a listening party at New York’s Rose Bar, will boast 12 tracks and a pretty unforgettable title: Stone Temple Pilots. As Rolling Stone previously reported, STP canceled their final concerts of 2009 in order to finish the Don Was-produced LP, their first since 2001’s Shangri-La Dee Da.

In our Spring Album Preview in the upcoming issue of Rolling Stone (on sale Wednesday, March 3rd), we take a closer look at Stone Temple Pilots, on which Scott Weiland’s lyrics touch on his divorce and his brother’s death and guitarist Dean DeLeo lays down psychedelic and heavy blues riffs. “Dean really stepped up. His playing is amazing,” Weiland tells RS. The album includes gospel-rocking closer “Maver” and the Seventies-tinged “Huckleberry Crumble.” You can check out the entire Stone Temple Pilots track list below.

With the arrival of the new album comes a new Stone Temple Pilots tour, and Weiland and company will kick off the festivities with a showcase at this year’s SXSW Festival. Full dates after the jump.

Stone Temple Pilots are “almost finished” with their first album of new music since 2001’s Shangri-La Dee Da, frontman Scott Weiland told Spinner. “There will probably be 11 songs on the record and we have nine completed already. Then you have to have B sides for Japan, the U.K. and the rest of Europe, so we’ll probably record 14 songs total,” Weiland said. As Rolling Stone previously reported, Stone Temple Pilots canceled their remaining 2009 tour dates in order to complete work on their new Don Was-produced disc, which is expected out in the early spring of 2010.

Out on the road for their long-running reunion tour, STP utilized the same songwriting process that resulted in albums like Core and Purple. “For the most part, Robert and Dean [DeLeo] write the instrumental riffs and then amongst the three of us we arrange the songs and then I write all the melodies and the lyrics,” Weiland revealed. The frontman wouldn’t spill any potential song titles, but did say that after focusing on the group’s greatest hits on their last trek, he’ll be eager to break out the new tracks when the band returns to the road for another huge tour in 2010.

While spring 2010 is the target date for the Pilots’ sixth album, there is one hurdle. As RS recently noted, the band is still embroiled in a legal battle with their old label Atlantic Records, who claim that STP’s contract calls for at least one more album, plus two more if Atlantic wants them. The Stone Temple Pilots instead believe they are now free agents after trying to use California laws to terminate a contract written under New York law.

Stone Temple Pilots will spend the rest of 2009 in the studio. Scott Weiland and Co. have postponed the remaining U.S. dates on their tour to get to work on “their highly anticipated record, which will be coming out in the early spring of next year,” the reunited band announced on their official Website. As Rolling Stone previously reported, the group has written roughly 18 songs for the album, which will be produced by Don Was.

Weiland has already promised fans the band will hit the road again for the long haul in support of their new album, their first since 2001’s Shangri-La Dee Da. “When we finish the album, there will be a big tour around its release and that will probably be a long tour,” Weiland said. According to Blabbermouth, however, the band and Atlantic Records are embroiled in a battle in which STP claims they are free agents and Atlantic insists they’re still under contract. So even though the album is expected out in early 2010, legal red tape may hold up its release.

Stone Temple Pilots have four more shows left on their 11-date tour of Canada, including a gig tonight in London, Ontario. All the tour dates that were scheduled after STP’s November 24th show in Halifax, Nova Scotia have been deleted from the band’s official site.
